The Earth Goes Around the Sun

Along with Calli's regular, at-home birthday celebration, she has the chance to celebrate/learn at her Montessori pre-school about birthdays and years.

Adam, Marin and I joined Calli at her school while the kids sang their special birthday song, "The Earth goes 'round the sun, the Earth goes 'round the sun, the Earth goes round the sun and Calli turns two years old."

They sing this song as many times as it takes until Calli turns 5 years old. To symbolize the Earth going around the Sun, Calli carries a globe and circles around a lit candle, symbolizing...the sun, yes.

After each "year," the kids are shown a timeline of pictures from each age of Calli's life. They are then encouraged to think about all the things Calli might have been able to do at that stage in her life. As they are making their guesses, Calli walks around the circle and shows her photograph from that year.

Then, back around the sun she goes...

Here she is showing off her timeline of photos up to age 4.

The kids have some pretty funny answers as to what Calli might have been doing at each age! Calli thought "boxing" was one of the funniest answers she heard.
There was one boy (3 years old) who, when Calli would show him her photo, would say "DARN IT!!" There was no apparent reason for his little outburst, but it kept me silently giggling!!

This clip is quite funny. Calli is about to show her picture to the kids in the circle and when her teacher says what she thinks is happening in the picture, Calli is quick to correct her!

Calli decided she wanted the children to sing Happy Birthday to her in French this year, so here they are singing it!!

Afterwards, we were able to enjoy some delicious brownies that Calli had requested I make for her celebration. I only made enough so we could all have one each, thinking I was pretty smart and all the parents would thank me later, but was bombarded with requests for more...RIGHT NOW!!! I still think I did the right thing! :)

WOW! What an amazing school. You are so lucky to have found such a great place. I'm very impressed with the whole ceremony!

What a lovely ceremony. (I can't believe she's been around the sun that many times!) It looks like a very warm and inviting place.

Aww! Bonne Fete a toi, Calli! I love her little skip when she goes back to the teacher's side after blowing out the candle.
