Halifax Holiday

Last week, Calli and I had the chance to visit my brother, Colin, at his new place in Halifax. It was SO nice to be able to spend some time with Calli, just the two of us. It was also really nice to get to see my brother and spend some quality time with him in his new home.

Calli loved seeing her Uncle Colin and was even more excited when he met us at the airport and presented Calli with a small brown bag filled with Halloween treats! Werther's and Hersheys Kisses are a lovely combination and became a game of "Checkers" once we got back to Uncle Colin's apartment.

As all good tourists must do, we took a drive out to Peggys Cove one afternoon. We timed it perfectly weather-wise. Although it was cold and breezy out by the ocean, we shared the view with only 6 other people!! Colin says during the week there are heaps of people clambering about on the rocks. I loved the drive through the very small town. It wasn't what I had expected and I was very pleasantly surprised.

We were only one day ahead of the Hurricane that blew through, so we were truly lucky to have such amazing weather that day!

Calli was worried that the waves were going to wash up on the rocks and sweep us all away! I guess after all of our trips to Tofino and warning her about not going onto the rocks, she was a bit confused.

The Lighthouse is now the village post office and is open during the summer months. You can actually have your stamps cancelled with a lighthouse shaped post mark! Unfortunately, it was closed when we were there and our postcards are un-cancelled.

Calli did a great job taking a photo of Uncle Colin and I!

After Peggys Cove, we had a quick lunch at the Sou'Wester and headed over to the SwissAir Flight 111 Memorial site. The landscape is breathtaking and SO different than that of the West Coast. I really loved that the memorial blended in with the surrounding landscape.

It was so quiet and calm and such a beautiful spot for a memorial. It was truly peaceful. We were quite moved by the Swiss flag blowing in the sea breeze.

This picture is the view looking back towards Peggys Cove. If you click on the picture to enlarge it, you'll see the lighthouse of Peggys Cove in the distance.

Calli and I managed to get out of Halifax before they began cancelling flights. Because we were travelling on Stand-By tickets, we missed 4 flights before finally hopping on a flight to Toronto and catching a 2nd one to Montreal. All the direct flights were full and we figured we'd have more options by going to TO. When we arrived home, I called Colin to see about the weather and it was already raining very heavily!! We were lucky we got out when we did!

(Thank you Colin for such a nice visit and for showing us around Halifax. I hope we'll be able to come again and see more of the city next time! Thank you! xoxo)

The write up on Peggys Cove and the Memorial are amazing stories of how the Cove was named and the tragedy of the Swiss Air flight.

Sure hope I will be along on the next visit to the east coast, preferably not with a hurricane on our tails though!
